Afan Argoed Trail Centre Wales
When:

Where:
Afan Trail Centre - West Glamorgan
Category:
Away Day

Description

Level: Suitable for Intermediate and Advanced Riders

Time for our first weekend away..

This is a suggestion started by Lucy in the forum.. and frankly if carlsberg made trail centres...they'd have made this one

Afan is made up of four main trails..The Penhydd, The Whites Level, The Wall and the Skyline. So to each in turn

These four trails are nested not too far from the Jct 40 of the M4 south Wales. They are a common Londoners and South West Englander's Mecca trail riding destination.

  • The Penhydd is a fun trail for all, but a great trail for beginners to cut your teeth on. It has a long up but you are rewarded with a fun flowing descent with roots and lots of corners and switchbacks to practice on.
  • The White's Level is awesome and has more than most trails all in one. A beautiful route up takes you to a black rocky section (you can take an alternative and loads of fun still red route) that has rocks, technical corners and is steep, steep. steep. Later in the ride there is a cheeky northshore section as well as some fun rock drops (chicken run options exist too)
  • The Skyline is longggg and-has steep technical up's and down's. Great scenery and best you are fit for this one. The first up-is shared with the White's where it then parts off.
  • The Wall. When I first did the Wall I got a grin that stayed for a week, Prior to the Wall I was just getting into trail riding. After the Wall I was a confirmed junky. Tough cool climb followed by fast descents where at some point the singletrack is so sweet you don't even notice the pretty much cliff drop to one side. Jumps, one big mother of a rock slab. A sneaky technical section in the middle.

Coooool. I have called Glyncorrwg campsite and reserved space for 5 tents and a campervan (thats me!) on the 28th/ 29th/ 30th (Fri, Sat, Sun) under my name and the name of the Trax. The number of the place is 01639 851900 and it would be good if we can call back in April to confirm numbers and arrival days for everyone so that we have enough space- Dan can you take charge of this as I will be away (whoo hoo). Its £% per person a night.
There is a cafe, bike shop and showers and stuff onsite.

Just imagine, its gonna be SUMMER by the time we arrive in Wales! COME ON!smilies/grin.gif

Just noticed on the Afan forest website that there is a note about getting there as some of the roads are closed. Looks like there are signs to direct you anyway.

This is the website: http://www.afanforestpark.co.uk/default.aspx

"Due to essential maintenance on the A4107 taking place from the 6th of April 2010 a section of the A4107 will be closed. This means that you will not be able to access Afan Forest Park from Junction 40 of the M4. There will be diversion signs in place (see below) that will take you through Cwmafan so please follow these signs. The diversion is likely to be in place for at least 30 weeks. "

This is the http://www.afanforestpark.co.u...psite.aspx where we are staying at Afan forest:

There are 5 tent spaces booked for us for Saturday and Sunday night and as far as I know they are taken as follows:
Robert + Shaz + 2 = 2 tents
Dan + 1= 2 tents
My mate= 1 tent on Sunday night only
It sounds like there may be space for an extra tent here or there as we have 2 plots and the campsite is otherwsise full.

Most people are geting there on Sarturdaay morning.
We will be discussing what everyone wants to do over the weekend at the club meeting this Wednesday at Club Haha on Leicester Square from 6/ 6.30 onwards.

Hi All who are signed up,

last update before I leave tomorrow...Everyone has everyones mobile phone number pretty much. A generally gareed arrangement was made for the first Group ride to LEAVE the campsite at 1.00 on Saturday lunchtime. THis gives everyone time to get there, pitch tents (in an inclusive circle please everyone!), build bikes, eat carbs, go for test rides, get a sneaky first fall out the way and generally enjoy having arrived before we all set off together and scope each others bikes, skills and lycra arses out en masse.
From then on ion its Barbeques, riding and jolliment as it unfurls....cant wait to see you all there.
